Job Description

• Performs and analyzes medical laboratory tests using automated and manual procedures according to established protocols and with minimal supervision in order to obtain accurate information for use in patient assessment.
• Performs and monitors quality control within predetermined parameters to ensure accurate test performance.
• Performs calibration, preventive maintenance and trouble shooting of laboratory equipment as required.
• Assists in training of new employees and /or patients as required.
• Coordinates specimens and requisitions for reference laboratory testing and reports reference and office laboratory results according to documented procedure.
• Uses venipuncture, micro collection and culture techniques as required for appropriate specimen collection from all age groups with full consideration for patient safety needs.
• Maintains positive specimen identification throughout the collection process according to established policies and procedures.
• When trained, collects chain of custody urine specimens using proper chain of custody procedures, forms, and documentation.
• Operates the laboratory computer system utilizing routine programs to receive specimens and to retrieve and print laboratory data.
• Registers patients and specimens in appropriate ADT systems using current, correct, and complete demographic information. Knows how to obtain required information such as insurance carrier policy numbers, social security number, ICD-9 and CPT codes. Ensures compliance with regulatory guidelines.
• Answers the telephone, provides information and routes calls to optimize laboratory communication.
• Maintains departmental supplies and inventory; also prepares solutions, reagents and stains following documented laboratory procedure.


Education Requirements:

● Associate degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Technician, Chemical Science or Biological Science

Licensure/Certification Requirements:

● If Associate degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Technician then must be ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) eligible

(BOC must be received within one year of hire date).

● If Associate degree in chemical or biological science, Medical Laboratory Technician ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) required
